What is a car Gator?

John Deere Gator

A John Deere Gator converted into an ambulance: This vehicle is owned by Toronto District St. John Ambulance.

The John Deere Gator is a family of small all-terrain utility vehicles produced by the John Deere Corporation. Gators typically feature a box bed, similar in function to a pickup truck. The bed can also be installed as an electric dump body. The John Deere Gator has been made in a variety of configurations, with either four, five or six wheels. [1] The Gator line of vehicles are designed to serve on farms, worksites, and ranches, rather than as a pure off-road vehicle. However, it is possible to order with specific off-road features. Introduced in 1992, the vehicle replaced the five-wheeled John Deere AMT line introduced in 1987. [2]

The AMT 622/626 was the second-generation predecessor to the Gator 1988-1998.

Design [ edit ]

The Gator vehicles use small but powerful 341 cc (0.341 L) four-stroke engines found in lawn mowers, or an optional diesel engine that is also found in some Deere mowers and utility tractors. They use a continuously variable transmission employing a belt and a conical pulley system. Thus, they require no clutch or gear shifts to operate. Many third-party attachments are available for the Gator, including snow plows, sanders, and gun racks. The recommended maximum payload capacity is 600 lb (272 kg). The Gator’s predecessor, the AMT (short for «all-materials transporter»), was designed to easily be loaded into the back of a pickup truck to be transported to various remote and/or hard to get to location that conventional means such as towing a trailer would prove dangerous or troublesome. The first and second-generation AMT models were simple, easy to maintain, and easy to fix on site.

Variants [ edit ]

Gator HPX in use at a ranch

Within the Gator family of vehicles, John Deere produces several lines. They are the Traditional Series, the High Performance (HPX) Series, the Compact Series, and the XUV Series. [2] It also offers several specialty vehicles including the more off-road-oriented Trail Gator, which is olive in color to better serve recreational and sporting uses. [2] The Turf Gator is specially designed to serve golf courses. [2] The M-Gator is a militarized variant used by the U.S. Army. [2]

Traditional Series [ edit ]

The Traditional Series is the second generation of the original Gator, designed for medium-duty work. [2]

HPX Series [ edit ]

The High Performance or HPX Series Gators, introduced in 2004, are larger than the original Gator, and designed for heavier-duty use. [3] [2]

Compact Series [ edit ]

The Compact Series Gators, also introduced in 2004, are smaller and more like a golf cart in size and operation. [3] [2] They are targeted at homeowners rather than commercial customers. [3] [2]

Gator XUV [ edit ]

The Gator XUV 4×4 was introduced in 2007 as a more extreme-use Gator, for both commercial and recreational use. These models are often set up with snow plows and have severe use in the industry. The model comes with either gasoline or diesel engine choices.

Gator XUV 2011 Model [ edit ]

In response to an ever competitive market, Deere expanded the XUV line-up in 2011 to include an 825 cc, three-cylinder gas engine as an option to the current 625 cc engine. The 825 also sported a faster differential that allows the machine to reach speeds up 70 km (45 mi) per hour. In addition, they kept the diesel offering, but boosted the machines’ speed to 32 mph, then the fastest diesel utility vehicle in the market. The three machines also underwent a styling overhaul and a redesigned box.

M-Gator and R-Gator [ edit ]

M-Gator in Iraq

R-Gator, autonomous vehicle developed by iRobot and John Deere

In 1997 to 1998, the 261st Area Support Medical Battalion of the 44th Medical Brigade brought a Gator to Bosnia for Operation SFOR2. It was an off-the-shelf commercial version Gator that was painted in camouflage and equipped with a carrying tray on its hood, as well as brackets to hold rifles. Its main purpose was for casualty evacuation, and it could hold two litters on the rear deck. It came in handy for utility work as well, and was used mostly by the medical supply section for transporting supplies and equipment.

In 1997, the U.S. Army adopted a version of the Gator known as the M-Gator. [4] [5] The M-Gator is now also in use with the U.S. Marine Corps. [6] Following the upgrades of the original Gator, it is known in its current version as the M-Gator A1, and features upgrades such as rollover protection. [6] [7] It is the 6×4 variant, and uses the three-cylinder Yanmar diesel engine found in other Gator vehicles, and is also capable of using JP-8 fuel. [5] [7] The vehicle is capable of being air-dropped. [5] The Gator has been used in Iraq and Afghanistan for supply deliveries and casualty evacuation, as it is more nimble off-road than an HMMWV. [5] Although the M-Gator was not designed to carry equipment in the field, troops would put their gear onto the vehicles to lighten their loads when an M-Gator was available to them. [8] M-Gators are also used by Canadian Forces in Afghanistan.

In 2016, the U.S. rated its fleet of military UTVs, indicated as ‘LTATV’ (Lightweight Tactical All Terrain Vehicles), including the M-Gator A1 and M-Gator A3 at 1,100 lb (500 kg) for 4×4 units, and at 1,200 lb (540 kg) payload capacity for 6-wheeled units. [9]

Main article: iRobot R-Gator

The M-Gator has also been developed into an unmanned ground vehicle, known as the R-Gator. [10] It was developed by John Deere and iRobot. [10] It is capable of autonomous operations such as waypoint following with obstacle avoidance, and following dismounted infantry soldiers, as well as other vehicles.

Turf Vehicles series [ edit ]

John Deere ProGator

The Turf Vehicles series features the Gator TX, Gator TE, and the ProGator vehicles. The ProGators are intended for heavy-duty farm work, while the TX and TE are for niche industrial duties where quiet vehicles are desired, such as golf courses. The TE is an electric vehicle. [11]

I’ve been going here for the last 10 years and it has been a great asset to the industry. Jay is the man when it comes to parts and knowing exactly what you’re looking for. The turnaround time from finding the part to being able to walk out with the parts in hand is amazing. They have a great group of guys and the pricing is very fair for the quality of parts and the customer service you get. Definitely recommend them to everyone.

Donna, Sacramento CA

Best place ever, customer service is amazing, always able to answer questions.

TJ, Roseville CA

By far the best experience EVER purchasing a vehicle! So professional and helpful. Doug was amazing in making the process smooth and easy!! I definetly recommend checking out Auto Gator before any potential hassle and games you may walk into with a cheesy car salesman.

See Why Our Customers Love Us

“I was referred to this place by a guy who helped me with my flat on the side of the road. In a world with SO much craziness it’s nice to know there are good people. This place was very professional and reasonably priced. Did not try to hustle me into a product or service I didn’t need. Thanks, will be back any time I need my car serviced.”

—Jessica R. — Jacksonville, FL

“I’ve been going to Action Gator for at least 4 years now. I followed Mike from Apopka to Lake Mary because he is so honest and efficient. (I tried the Apopka location once and the service was horrible without Mike there) He never tries to upsell just to make money. There have been times when I thought I needed something done to my car (mind you- I know zero about cars so I can easily get ripped off if I’m not careful) and he explained it wasn’t necessary at the time. It is so hard to find a person like that so I don’t mind the commute since it offers that piece of mind and I always receive such great customer service. ”

—Denisse A. — Apopka, FL

“The staff at Action Gator Tire could not be nicer. I work close by and one day my tire went flat (after trying to fill it myself at the gas station). They took care of it immediately. I have been back a couple times and it’s always the same. Great customer service and great people!”

—Cara N. — Lake Mary, FL

“My brother sent me over here. They fixed my run flats in no time. They know what they’re doing compared to Tires Plus. I’ll never ever go to Tires Plus cause all the do is tell you to get new tires and cost you arm and a leg. These guys are awesome.”

—Jeff P. — Winter Garden, FL

“This place was so friendly and helpful. The entire staff knew what they were talking about when explaining the car. They kept me posted about my car’s status. They went above and beyond in my book. I would definitely recommend them for your auto service needs.”

—Chad A. — Orlando, FL

“We had an excellent experience with Action Gator Tire. I talked to Raul on the phone and he didn’t have the tires I wanted in stock, but got my number and called me back within ten minutes to say he could get a set. He also offered to call me back when the tires arrived, to save me from waiting around if the delivery was late. Raul was good to his word. I drove over when I got the call, and the tires were put on. Easy peasy! All the people we met and talked to at Action Gator were friendly and professional.”

—Nancy W. — Kissimmee, Orlando, FL

“Action Gator Tire on Fairbanks is the place to get tires in Winter Park. Their service is great, and the price is right. I compared prices of similar tires for my wife’s SUV a few weeks ago, and they came in with the low bid. The manager, Don, is the man. He was very professional when he originally gave me the quote, and he was very nice when I came back about a week later to have the service. I only waited for about a half hour while they put the new tires on and aligned them. The new tires look and feel great and we can already see a little better gas mileage. New tires can really make a difference. All in all, Action Gator Tire is awesome. I can confidently recommend these guys when it comes to tires.”

—Justin I. — Winter Park, FL

“Getting a mechanic who understands that not all worn parts need to be replaced on one visit is refreshing. They have been fair with me on price and service has been above average. I would recommend them to others in need of tires or car repair.”

—Bruce D. — Orlando, FL

“I walked in here last Tuesday after getting an oil change across the street and spoke with the manager. I told him I needed my tires rotated and balanced and that my car was hitting 60,000 miles and wanted a “check-up.” He looked up the recommended services for my make and model and quoted me on all the prices which were very reasonable and scheduled me an apt. for the next day. I came in at 2:30 and was done by 3:30 and everyone was very friendly. While they have a nice big waiting area, bonus is my favorite thai tea and sandwich shop is across the street so you can hang there while you wait and they will call you when your car is done!”

—Kyle B. — Orlando, FL

“This is the only garage In Orlando I will go to – batteries, oil changes, brakes, tires. Just had the blower motor replaced on my Mazda 3. Not cheap, but 5 stars for staff. I trust them (as much as you can trust a mechanic). It would be AWESOME if they vacuumed out the car just for that nice added touch.”

—Kristy M. — Orlando, FL
